Office and bath framed in

Today My day, uncle Mike, Austin, and Melissa’s dad Brian all came over to help with the basement. It really goes fast when you have enough people. The bathroom and my office are all framed in. The storage room just needs one more piece done. Once that is done, there are two more walls that need to get done, but they are pretty simple. There is nothing that needs built around. My next tasks are to get the electrical, insulation, and drywall done in my office. Then I can finally move all of my office stuff down there. I’m going to like that a lot more because it is a lot cooler down there, and my computers throw off a lot of heat. Hopefully my dad can come out next weekend to work on the electrical. I’m planning on having a separate cicruit just for the office. I also want to put lots of outlets in, because finding an outlet in my office is a continuing source of frustration.

Blog Bandwagon

I’m trying to get my coworkers to jump on the blogging bandwagon. I’ve set up a .TEXT blog server, and about 5 blogs have been created so far. Everyone seems to like the concept, so we’ll have to see how it works in the long run. Hopefully the eagerness won’t die off after a few weeks. I really believe that blogging is a great way to store disorganized information. The problem with traditional storage systems is the difficulty in data entry. If a system is not easy to put data into, then it will not be used. I personally love the idea of using a blog to augment my long term memory.

Firefox Rocks

If you are still using Internet Explorer for your browser, you need to switch. All of the spyware and bugs are really annoying. I switched to FireFox months ago, but I still get constant phone calls about spyware and viruses.

Still not convinced? Check out the “Switch” site. Once you do switch, be sure to go to this site for some tips, and here for a list of great extensions, to extend the functionality of FireFox.

Top 10 Reasons to switch: (from the switch site)

  1. Tabbed Browsing - Makes surfing the web faster
  2. Popup Blocking
  3. Find Stuff Easier
  4. Simplified Privacy / Annoyance Eliminator
  5. Better Bookmarks and History
  6. Accessible, Intelligent, Responsive
  7. Customizable and Extendable
  8. Modern Download Manager
  9. Built for standards
  10. KISS (Keep It Simple and Straight-Forward)

Kevin & Rachel’s Wedding

Kevin & Rachel’s wedding was really great. A lot of people from out of state came in to be with them. The reception was a lot of fun. Their DJ was very unique, and really made the evening what it was. He announced the arrival of the wedding party, and introduced each couple. It was really nice for those who did not know some of them. There were quite a few speeches before supper, and included the best man, the brides father, and even the groom himself. Kevin told us the exciting story about how they met at the theater they were working at. The food and the drinks were excellent. During the dancing, the guys from the wedding party dressed up as the Village People, and gave an excellent rendition of YMCA. I got some great photo’s, and I will be posting them for friends and family to view very soon here.

The trip back was great. We got out of Detroit very early, so we avoided the traffic there. We were on the road around 7am (central). We stopped for about an hour to eat at Big Boy for breakfast. I hadn’t eaten there in a long time, and was very happy with their breakfast buffet. Driving through Chicago was pretty easy. We hit a little bit of traffic, but nothing to complain about. We ended up getting home before 5pm (central), so the driving time was around 8.5 hours. It was almost exactly 500 miles each way. For future reference, we took 43->94->90->94->14->696->53.

In Utica, MI - Day 1

We’re finally here in Michigan for Rachel and Kevin’s wedding. We definitely had a fun trip. We broke up the trip by staying in a Days Inn near the half-way mark, in a city called Michigan City, IN. We turned on the TV, and what did we see? PORN! We were pretty shocked, and decided to go have some ice cream. When we got back, we needed to get some more towels from the lobby. Guess what was playing? PORN! After watching for a little while, we realized it was just a show on HBO.

Traffic for most of the trip was a breeze, even through Chicago. That was until we got stuck in traffic on I-94 in Michigan, about a half hour from Detroit. Luckily, we hit it right after the accident happened, so we only had a short delay and detour. Before we hit it, we saw some of Melissa’s relatives (Wendy, Paul, and Nick) pass us. We eventually found out that they stopped to eat, and hit the back end of the traffic. They had to sit in traffic for a couple of hours, were as we lucked out, and only lost about 1 hour.

Gary and Margie had us over to their place for a buffet supper. There was a lot of great food, and Melissa got to see a lot of relative’s that she hadn’t seen for a long time. Rachel opened up her gifts from the people that were there.

After the buffet party, we came back to the hotel, and checked out everyone elses room. We ended up with a pretty nice room, with a king size bed. We are right down the hall from Brian and Maxine. Melissa’s grandparents stayed at a different hotel, and were in a suite that Gary and Margie paid for.

Tomorrow is the wedding, so I’m sure I will have lots of photos and stories.

Off to Michigan!

Melissa and I are headed off to Michigan today!

I figured out a great way to plan the trip. I set it up in Map Point 2004, then I put all of the key points as waypoints into Mapsource, and created a route. Then I sent the waypoints and the route to my GPS. Now it will let me know when key exits/turns are coming up! Should be easy!
